Better Skiing Technique - Counterblast Against The Mumbo Jumbo

    July 12th, 2008

The snow is falling. We all know how you feel because we feel it too. It’s time to dust the cobwebs off the skis, check your winter sports insurance and head for the high mountains.

But there are one or two niggling little doubts in the back of your mind. Will I remember how to do it? What happens if I make a clot of myself pushing off for the first run of the season in front of my friends?

Well here’s some good news for you; these articles are designed to give you a new look at skiing technique. There will be no pictures of skiers with bent knees holding out their arms in graceful postures. There will be no arrows pointing here and there to demonstrate pressure points, weight distribution and ski torque. It will just be you and me out on the ski slopes.

I’d like to provide food for your own imagination rather than hitting you with a lot of teckie stuff. I’d like to cut through all the scientific mumbo jumbo that surrounds the sport of skiing, and promotes the myth that skiing technique is too tricky by half. A lot of the stuff will be a bit controversial. But that’s not a problem. It’s a useful stimulant.

Back in 1928 when he was a student in Kitzbuhel Austria, Ian Fleming said to his tutor, ‘Difficult to ski? Surely it can’t be difficult to ski? One falls over, or one doesn’t fall over. It’s as simple as that!’ He was a fit, athletic nineteen year old drawn into a sport that had just begun to lay the foundations of modern day skiing.

There were no instructors in those days; the local mountain men were merely guides, bemused at the antics of these lunatic Englishmen. It was only later that they conceived the idea of ski school, setting down rules of instruction based on those early days.

About twenty years ago I skied with the ski school for one day in St Anton Austria. To me it was an unknown resort and I wanted to get the lie of the mountains. There were eight of us in the class, and nearly all were Austrian. We were practising our skiing technique in the lightest powder snow and it was a beautiful day. There was a bit of instruction - mostly of the ‘bend zer knees’ variety. But what I found really interesting was that this was class 1 in the St Anton ski school, and these people had worked their way up from class 21 or whatever for the past ten or fifteen years!. Ski School was their life, their participation was a badge to be worn with pride. They had almost learnt how to ski!

That’s not the method you’ll find here. I’m not saying that complete beginners should start with these articles. For them the Ski School is obligatory for the first few days at least, but like birds they should then be allowed to fly the nest. Where you and I come in is any time after that; where you can already ski a bit, but have reached a point when you know it’s time to become a better skier, and need some helpful hints to get really good!

We’ll discuss the equipment and how it works, what has to be done to get it to work, and how you and the ski, in perfect harmony, can negotiate, without fear or trepidation, every kind of snowy mountainside, and learn how to do the sort of turns you only see on Sky Sports.

Watch this space and come with me - we’re off!

Simon Dewhurst has taught downhill skiing in North America, Scandinavia and the European Alps for 35 years. He currently runs a ski chalet agency in the French Alps. His book “Secrets of Better Skiing” can be found at http://www.ski-jungle.com. If you have any comments about the above article, he will be happy to answer them.

Your Beginners Guide To The World of Formula One Auto Racing Tracks

    July 2nd, 2008

A traditional F1 course by and large includes an extended portion of straight road on which the starting grid is to be found. The pit lane, where the Formula One drivers pull in for refuelling & tyres during the race, & where the F1 constructors work on the vehicles before the Formula One race, is typically located in parallel to the starting rows. The layout of the rest of the race circuit varies greatly, even though in a great deal of examples the course goes in a clockwise direction. Those couple of courses that go anti-clockwise (and as a result have predominantly left-handed bends) might cause Formula One drivers neck troubles owing to the tremendous amount of sideways forces made by Formula 1 cars dragging their body in the opposite direction to normal.

A numerous number of the courses presently in use are exclusively built for racing days. The modern street race courses are the Circuit de Monte-Carlo and Melbourne, though street races in other urban locations come and go (Las Vegas & Detroit) & proposals for such grand prixs are often considered ? in recent times London and Beirut. More than a few other race courses are also totally or partially laid out on normal public roads, like that of Spa-Francorchamps. The glamour & love of the Monte Carlo Formula One grand prix are the chief motivation why the race course is still in use nowadays, since it’s believed not to pass the firm safety requirements obligatory on other circuits. Three-time Formula One World champion Nelson Piquet notably portrayed racing in Monaco as “like riding a bike in your own living room”. Beat The Kakuro Monster

    May 31st, 2008

Trailing the revival and the reign of the sudoku puzzles in 2005, another Western game gives a Japanese twist hit the puzzle scene. Kakuro puzzles, formerly known as cross sums, are now making waves as the newest puzzle craze. Bearing similarities in look and style to the more popular sudoku, kakuro puzzles promise to be more challenging and even more addictive than sudoku.

We know how brain and mental workouts enhance mental functions and sudoku has been included among the list of top brain boosters. Rightly so, since sudoku certainly poses quite a challenge to players. But if you think that simply placing numbers on squares in correct logic is challenging enough, try solving kakuro puzzles. They provide added difficulty and challenge of a higher degree since they require logic, cognitive, and practical mathematics. They are sure to provide you with a tougher and grittier mental exercise than the tamer sudoku. Certainly, these puzzles are not for the faint-hearted.

Kakuro puzzles are daunting, but they are not impossible. Enthusiasts emphasize that players need not have exceptional mathematical abilities or a genius like Einstein’s to solve the puzzles. Practical mathematical knowledge is often enough to solve the puzzles as long as players employ effective strategy and logic. Having sufficient grasp and mastery of the puzzle rules make it easy for players like you to use the right tactics. The rules of the puzzles are relatively simple. The “playing board” looks similar to a crossword with white and dark squares. However, there are no clues at the bottom of the box. The numbers on the white spaces are the only clues a you have. Each number represents the sum of the missing numbers in cells or boxes it refers to. Note that same numbers can’t be addends for the same run. For example, if the number in the box is 4, you can use 1 and 3 but not 2 and 2. Though the trial-and-error technique is often used, there are more sophisticated and logical techniques than filling your boxes with erasures and pencil marks.

A popular tactic is to search for cells with least combinations. These are usually the digits on the lower end of the number spectrum like 3, 5, 4, and other single digits. This limits the possible answers or numbers for a specific cell. Applying the same technique for the adjacent cells gives you a shot at the correct figure. Another tactic used in solving kakuro puzzles is looking for common numbers. This happens when two cells share a number. Finding the common number allows you to decide where to position the other number. To illustrate, if 3 and 1 are your answers for the number 4 at the vertical column or run and 1 and 5 for 6 at the horizontal line, 1 is your common number. Therefore, 1 merits the box at the intersection of 6 and 4. Experienced players solve puzzles by finding all possible and valid combinations plus correct cross referencing. Because as in sudoku, the position of the numbers matter in kakuro.

This third trick is probably the most elementary and least sophisticated. Marking answers on the edges of the boxes or cells with a pencil does not help you to solve the puzzles. However, it does help you track down your digits and combinations. This is especially helpful since kakuro puzzles have no definite limits. The “playing board” can measure as little as 3 by 3 or extend to God knows where. Over time, playing becomes easier because of practice. Also, you would have stock combinations in your head which you can use in playing. This is also a sign that you need to ditch the easier puzzles and move on to more challenging kakuro puzzles.

    Las Vegas Golf

    May 31st, 2008

The city of Las Vegas is fast becoming well known, for not only its casinos but also for its golf. Today, there are at least 50 golf courses in and around Las Vegas, though not all of them are operational; some are still under construction. This number is indeed significant, in view of city’s half-million population. This probably has to do with the fact that the tourist traffic in this city has been on the rise.

In the year 2004, around 37 million tourists visited the city and around 22,000 conventions were held there. For a growing number of visitors, golf is an obvious choice; it is a year round sport in Las Vegas. It rains for around six weeks in a year in this city, but even during that time you can play golf. In fact, there is only one week wherein the average person cannot play golf in Las Vegas.

Almost all the major pro tours, such as PGA, LPGA and SPGA, have their annual tournaments here. During the winter one can start playing golf at noon. During the summers–from June to September–one can start playing early in the morning and enjoy some picturesque golf courses designed by some of the most well-known golf course designers in the world.

However, with the growing popularity of this game, the cost of playing it has also gone up. Until a few years ago you could play at some of the old golf courses for around 10 to 12 dollars, with or without a cart. But nowadays there are very few golf courses where this fee is less than a hundred dollars. That has deterred many of the local residents from taking up this game.

Las Vegas Golf provides detailed information on Las Vegas Golf, Las Vegas Golf Courses, Las Vegas Golf Packages, Las Vegas Golf Resorts and more. Las Vegas Golf is affiliated with Best Shows in Las Vegas.

    Sports View for March

    May 8th, 2008

Heading into the combines, the biggest story will definitely be
Maurice Clarett, and how he can rebound from last year’s
disaster. (Regardless of how his combine goes, keep in mind that
before Adrian Peterson this year, Clarett was the best freshman
running back in decades.) If Clarett goes past the first day of
the draft he will be a steal.

Speaking of the Draft; LB Derrick Johnson out of Texas is my
favorite player coming out this year. He will have an immediate
impact, especially if he goes to the right team. I also think
that QB Jason Campbell maybe a sleeper, I don’t think he should
go before Alex Smith or Aaron Rogers, but I think he could make
a good down the road NFL quarterback.

A lot of people are saying that this year’s slam dunk contest
rejuvenated the competition. Was it just me, or did Josh Smith
not do anything we haven’t already seen. He did a Dr. J, he
jumped ‘over’(it was actually more ‘by’ than over). The ‘Nique
jersey was a nice touch, but really he just redid a bunch of old
    school dunks.

How awful is ABC’s coverage of the NBA? How is it that All Star
weekend came and went and there was not a sniff of it on a major
    network?

Madness is right around the corner, and it is impressive that
Illinois is still unbeaten, but that doesn’t change the fact
that they will not make the Final Four. North Carolina is still
the team to beat for the National Championship. Kansas &
Kentucky are our next 2 favorites to be cutting down nets come
April. While Boston College is a possibility, I think they are
more likely in the same category as Illinois. (this year’s St.
    Joe’s?)

The Chicago Cubs needed to get rid of Sammy Sosa. But do they
really think that Jeromy Burnitz is going to make up the
    production offensively?

    Trivia Question:

Which was the only team in the majors whose shortstop led the
    team in slugging percentage?

    -Would you believe the Tigers.

Carlos Guillen is the early favorite for most underrated player
    heading into this season.

Now that Ed Reed has won defensive player of the year honors, we
can no longer consider him the most underrated player in the
NFL. Early candidates for new underrated include Micheal Lewis
in Philadelphia, Eugene Wilson in New England, and Andre Johnson
    in Houston.

    Tarp Shelters For Lightweight Backpackers

    May 4th, 2008

Why use tarp shelters? The biggest reason ultralight backpackers use them is to reduce pack weight. The lightest tent you can find will be close to three pounds. Some of the newest ultralight tarps weigh just seven ounces.

Weight isn’t the only advantage of tarp shelters, though. They also give you room to move, and you can easily look around. You can quickly take them down when you’re ready to go. If it’s wet, just shake it off and it will fit in an outside pocket of your backpack. Even if they were the same weight, I’d still prefer a tarp over a tent for most trips.

The lightest of my own tarp shelters weighs 16 ounces with all the strings. That seems heavy now, when I look at the new ultralight tarps out there. Integral Designs Sil Tarp 5′ x 8′, for example, weighs just 7 ounces.

The Bozeman Mountain Works Stealth 0 Catenary Ridgeline Ulralight Backpacking Tarp weighs an amazing 5.7 ounces. With a name like that, you know it has to be expensive. Of course, almost any backpacking tarp will be lighter - and cheaper - than the lightest tents out there.

    How To Use Tarp Shelters

You’ll probably need a bigger tarp than you think. A seven-foot roof may seem like it will cover your six-foot body well enough, until a blowing rain soaks your feet. Proper use is even more important than size, though.

Pitch the low side into the wind. Keep all sides low if a storm is coming. Evenly tighten guy lines. Use rocks, trees, trekking poles and whatever else helps. Pitch the tarp tightly, to keep it from flapping in the wind too much, which can loosen the strings or cause the tarp to tear.

If you haven’t used tarp shelters before, experiment until you can quickly set up in several different enviroments. Bring lightweight stakes, until you learn how to use sticks and trees and rocks. No stakes means less weight to carry. I’ve always found something to use, even up high on the tundra.

You might have to treat the seams with a sealant occasionally, or at least when you first buy your tarp. Buy seam-sealer anyplace that sells tarps and tents. You’ll need string or cord of some sort for tie-downs. I put varying lengths around the tarp, so I can untie and use the long ones where I need them. Sometimes that tree will be a little too far away.

I use 4′ by 7′ pieces of plastic for groundsheets. They’re opened-up giant garbage bags that weigh 2 ounces. They’re disposable, but I’ve used one for a week in the Rockies, and they’re cheap and easy to replace. Whatever you use, lay your bag on it, to be sure you’ll have room. You don’t want to be touching the wet ground just because you moved a little. On the other hand, if it’s too big it will catch rain out near the edge of the tarp, and funnel it back to you.

Mosquitos keep a lot of ultralight backpackers from using tarp shelters. Repellant is a partial solution, as is using the tarp only when it isn’t too buggy. A headnet helps, but keeping the rest of your body covered when it’s warm isn’t pleasant. Pitch camp in a high, breezy place and you’ll have fewer bug problems.

There are also mesh shelters you can pitch under your tarp. The lightest I’ve seen weighs 1 pound, 7 ounces. With a 7-ounce tarp, you’d be under 2 pounds for a shelter, and it comes with a floor, so you don’t have to bring a groundsheet. Ultralight tarps and tarp shelters, by the way, weigh less than 20 ounces, a standard I just invented, but it seems reasonable.

Steve Gillman is a long-time backpacker, and advocate of lightweight backpacking. His advice, stories and tarp recommendations can be found at www.TheUltralightBackpackingSite.com
