    Diabetes is Manageable

    May 2nd, 2008

It is estimated that over 18 million people over the age of 20 in this country have diabetes. Persons over the age of 45 and those considered obese according to the Bio Mass Index are in elevated risk categories for this potentially fatal disease. Once diagnosed the potential health conditions that may result are: partial to complete blindness, kidney disease, hypoglycemia and certain sexual and urological problems including erectile dysfunction in men. Despite all of these potential effects the truth is very simplediabetes is manageable!

Without question, a diabetes diagnosis does in fact mean that you will live with the condition for the rest of your life but it does not mean an end to your life. Far from it. There are millions of people living very full and complete lives despite the condition’s very real potential to bring about serious consequences to one’s well-being. And don’t worrya diabetes diagnosis does NOT mean that you need to worry about going in and out of the doctor’s office every other day either! With proper self-discipline, a thorough understanding of the disease and its effective treatment techniques, and especially with the proper equipmentthis is a VERY manageable condition!

You will need to check your glucose levels every day and depending on your particular diagnosis insulin shots may be required to manage your blood chemistry effectively. Having a Glucogen emergency kit is definitely a good idea as well. So long as you do not make the mistake of thinking that this is not a serious condition that requires daily attention and of course always keep on hand all of the supplies necessary for proper treatment there is absolutely NO reason why any of your normal activities need to be discontinued! All of the medical supplies you need are available online and can be delivered to your home as needed. So if you have recently been diagnosed with diabetes just make certain to get those supplies and be certain to check your glucose level in regular intervals and take whatever additional steps your physician has advisedand above all else, go out there and live your life because diabetes IS manageable!

    Mesothelioma Diagnosis: An Introduction

    April 21st, 2008

A physician may suspect malignant mesothelioma in a patient who has symptoms suggesting this cancer and who reports a history of asbestos exposure. Careful medical examination may also reveal the presence of fluid in the pleural or abdominal cavity. Once malignant mesothelioma is suspected, a number of methods are available to help confirm the diagnosis.

Imaging methods, such as x-rays, CT scans, MRIs and PET scans, help determine the location, size and extent of the cancer, and specifically detect pleural or peritoneal thickening, fluid in the pleural or abdominal cavity, or nodules of cancer cells. However, a definitive diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma can only be made after the examination of cells from abnormal tissue.

A biopsy of abnormal tissue is performed to find out whether the cells in this tissue are cancerous or not. Such tissue can be removed through minimally invasive surgery. Fluid in the pleural or abdominal cavity may also contain cancer cells, and may also be removed for analysis. Cells from abnormal tissue or fluid are examined under the microscope, and can be identified as normal or cancerous. However, such examination does not necessarily confirm the type of cancer. Cells found in pleural mesotheliomas can resemble lung cancer cells, and cells found in peritoneal mesotheliomas can resemble ovarian cancer cells. To differentiate between these different forms of cancer, a method called immunohistochemistry is often used. This method detects proteins on the surface of cancer cells that are specific to certain types of cancers. A newer method called DNA microarray analysis examines the genes of cancer cells. Malignant mesothelioma cancer cells have different gene patterns from other cancer cells and from normal cells.

While no blood tests confirm a diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma, there are certain blood abnormalities that suggest the presence of a cancer. Recent research suggests that elevated levels of a blood protein called osteopontin may help in the early detection of mesothelioma.

    April 17th, 2008

It’s afternoon, you’re starting to feel rundown, wondering
    how you’re going to muster
enough get up and go to finish out your day.

If you have given up caffeine or trying to cut back, here are four energy-boosters without a coffee cup or soda in sight!

Walk or run up 2 flights of stairs trying to take 2 at a time. Land on
every other one going up, then turn around and land on the one missed
going down. Do this twice. It is a great way to get your circulation
and heart rate going. Even just getting up and moving around can help wake you some.

Run your hands under cold water for about 20 seconds. Now close your eyes.
Using the middle finger of each hand, tap each of the following areas five times.
Between your eyebrows, the top of your cheekbones, your chin and the area just under
your nose. That each one 5 times and what your doing is stimululating the
nerve endings on our face which in turn gives you an all-over pick me up.

Try slathering yourself with citrus scents. We all know how orange juice wakes us up
and good for us but did you know that just the scent can enhance
your energy and boost mood? Look for products infused with lemon, lime
    or orange essential oils.

When all else fails, why not take a power nap? Even grownups still need naps.
Try to darken the room, set the alarm for about 20 minutes. Most cell phones
these days have an alarm feature. Now lay back in your chair or lay down
on your office couch, close your eyes and relax! A good power nap is no
longer than 30 minutes at the least.

Go ahead and try these simple but easy tips to help muster up enough energy

    Baby scanning - www.babyultrasound.co.uk

    April 16th, 2008

The method know as three dimensional ultrasound scanning is that can be used during early pregnancy, it provides 3d images of the fetus. Most of the time these pictures are rapidly captured and combined to make a “4d ultrasound scan”.

Three dimensional scans works in a similar way to the normal ultrasound scanning methods except that the ultrasound waves can be sent from multiple directions. The ultrasound pulses are reflected back and captured and provide information to construct a 3d image in in the same way as 3d pictures. 3d ultrasound was devised in the usa.

It’s important to understand that sonologists around the world always conjured 3d pictures of the body in their minds whilst doing 2d scans. However, until recently it was impossible to do this kind of reconstruction on on data using ultrasound. With the introduction of baby scans for the first time allowed us a peek into the mechanics of thinking of a sonologist and hence letting us see the images on the ultrasound machine.

4d ultrasound imaging should utilize ultrasound energy following the same limits as conventional 2d ultrasound to create the 3d images. While there is no information of harm due to 3d ultrasound, its use in none medical situations should be undertaken with an understanding of the risks.

    An Overview Of Mesothelioma Cancers

    April 14th, 2008

    What are Mesothelioma Cancers?

Mesothelioma cancers are the cancers that spread in the mesothelium tissues. Mesothelium in general is the name of tissue that forms lining of different body organs such as heart, lungs, abdomen and reproductive organs. The lining around abdominal organs is known as peritoneal membrane. Lining around lungs is called pleural membrane while the lining around heart is called pericardium.

These linings perform two functions. They protect the internal organs by producing a lubricating fluid and to allow the smooth movement of the internal organs. Mesothelioma cancers are the cancers affecting these membranes. The names of the cancers depend on the tissue or linings they affect. Peritoneal mesothelioma, pleural mesothelioma and pericardial mesothelioma are the names of cancers of linings of abdomen, lungs and heart, respectively. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common of all mesothelioma cancers and is found in 70 % of the mesothelioma patients. Peritoneal mesothelioma constitutes 10% to 20% of the mesothelioma patients while third type pericardial mesothelioma, is rare.

    Symptoms of Mesothelioma Cancers

Symptoms of mesothelioma cancers are same as of other common diseases. It makes diagnosis mesothelioma cancers a difficult task. Pain and swelling in abdomen, weakness, loss of weight, loss of appetite and nausea are some symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma. Symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are persistent cough, difficulty in breathing, weight loss, loss of appetite, weakness, chest pains, lower back pains and difficulty in swallowing.

    History

History of mesothelioma cancers goes back to as far back as 1900s. It took about 60 years to gather sufficient information about these mesothelioma cancers. By the end of sixth decade of last century, experts could conclude that exposure to asbestos particles is the reason behind the disease. J. C. Wagner was first researcher to report 32 cases of mesothelioma cancers and confirmed its association with asbestos exposure.

One alarming fact about the mesothelioma cancers is its extended latency period. These cancers may remain asymptomatic in the body for even up to 50 years. Chances of survival for mesothelioma patients are rare and the average survival period after diagnosis is not more than 12-24 months. Surgery if diagnosed early, chemotherapy and radiation therapy are some common treatments for all types of mesothelioma cancers. People suffering from mesothelioma cancers can file lawsuits to recover damages for medical expenses and other damages. They can file the lawsuits against the persons and companies responsible for causing asbestos exposure.

    Asbestos Legislation

    April 10th, 2008

Since the introduction of the first Asbestos bill in Congress some 30 years ago, the scenario has changed tremendously. The number of claims that are filed today are many times greater than in previous years. Of these numerous cases, some hold the stand of real human sufferings while others hold the place of real forged means. This has made the efforts of legislation tougher and has initiated the need to implement certain general rules for all the people who are suffering or have suffered from the carcinogenic Asbestos exposure.

On May 26, 2005, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved a bill that would establish a $140 billion fund for a no-fault, administrative program to provide compensation to the people afflicted with Asbestos-induced disease. The trial lawyers protested for the low amount being put for the victims of Asbestos, while the experts benefited their stand by commenting that it was not to be inclusive for the fraudulent cases. Many states in America are taking crucial and well-designed steps to prevent legal fraud.

Asbestos is a carcinogen to humans. It is a highly particulating fiber. When pressed with the hand, microscopic dust is released and is inhaled into the lungs. This produces a number of diseases relating to the lungs, including mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is one of the most common diseases associated with asbestos. There is much litigation surrounding mesothelioma.

To this day asbestos exists. It is near the end of being phased out from all public use. However, the fiber is more or less a naturally occuring substance, so it will never be completely eradicated.

Thai Massage Berlin: Introduction to Thai Massage

    April 3rd, 2008

The development of Thai massage began about 2500 years ago in India. Thai massage is based on the old Indian teachings of Ayurveda and Yoga. Additional influences have come from traditional Chinese medicine with it’s meridian system. Thai massage came to Thailand in conjunction with Buddhism and is called Nuad Phaen Boran in the old writings. Nowadays Thai massage is an integral element of the traditional Thai medicine.

On the one Hand Thai massage is a manifold science, which is taught at the university as part of a four-year traditional medical degree program. On the other hand Thai massage is practiced with much skill by many women and men throughout the Thai population with a less formal education. These Thai massage therapists oftentimes obtained their knowledge through oral tradition and have less extensive theoretical knowledge compared to their colleagues trained at the universities.

With Thai massage the active movements of the massager harmonize with the passive movements if the person getting the massage, similar to a dance. Expressed a little more prosaically Thai massage is often called “Yoga for the lazy”, because the person getting the massage is not moving into the Yoga positions, involved in a Thai massage treatment, by himself. The massager rather carefully guides him into the appropriate stance.
These gentle movements, intensive stretchings and the rhythmic way of breathing are an important characteristic for Thai massage. Another characteristic is the pressing of energy points and the treatment of reflex zones. In this way the inner organs, nerves and glands are promoted in their function. Another part of the extensive treatment system of Thai massage is herbal medicine and the application of herbal steam baths.
