    Beat The Kakuro Monster

    May 31st, 2008

Trailing the revival and the reign of the sudoku puzzles in 2005, another Western game gives a Japanese twist hit the puzzle scene. Kakuro puzzles, formerly known as cross sums, are now making waves as the newest puzzle craze. Bearing similarities in look and style to the more popular sudoku, kakuro puzzles promise to be more challenging and even more addictive than sudoku.

We know how brain and mental workouts enhance mental functions and sudoku has been included among the list of top brain boosters. Rightly so, since sudoku certainly poses quite a challenge to players. But if you think that simply placing numbers on squares in correct logic is challenging enough, try solving kakuro puzzles. They provide added difficulty and challenge of a higher degree since they require logic, cognitive, and practical mathematics. They are sure to provide you with a tougher and grittier mental exercise than the tamer sudoku. Certainly, these puzzles are not for the faint-hearted.

Kakuro puzzles are daunting, but they are not impossible. Enthusiasts emphasize that players need not have exceptional mathematical abilities or a genius like Einstein’s to solve the puzzles. Practical mathematical knowledge is often enough to solve the puzzles as long as players employ effective strategy and logic. Having sufficient grasp and mastery of the puzzle rules make it easy for players like you to use the right tactics. The rules of the puzzles are relatively simple. The “playing board” looks similar to a crossword with white and dark squares. However, there are no clues at the bottom of the box. The numbers on the white spaces are the only clues a you have. Each number represents the sum of the missing numbers in cells or boxes it refers to. Note that same numbers can’t be addends for the same run. For example, if the number in the box is 4, you can use 1 and 3 but not 2 and 2. Though the trial-and-error technique is often used, there are more sophisticated and logical techniques than filling your boxes with erasures and pencil marks.

A popular tactic is to search for cells with least combinations. These are usually the digits on the lower end of the number spectrum like 3, 5, 4, and other single digits. This limits the possible answers or numbers for a specific cell. Applying the same technique for the adjacent cells gives you a shot at the correct figure. Another tactic used in solving kakuro puzzles is looking for common numbers. This happens when two cells share a number. Finding the common number allows you to decide where to position the other number. To illustrate, if 3 and 1 are your answers for the number 4 at the vertical column or run and 1 and 5 for 6 at the horizontal line, 1 is your common number. Therefore, 1 merits the box at the intersection of 6 and 4. Experienced players solve puzzles by finding all possible and valid combinations plus correct cross referencing. Because as in sudoku, the position of the numbers matter in kakuro.

This third trick is probably the most elementary and least sophisticated. Marking answers on the edges of the boxes or cells with a pencil does not help you to solve the puzzles. However, it does help you track down your digits and combinations. This is especially helpful since kakuro puzzles have no definite limits. The “playing board” can measure as little as 3 by 3 or extend to God knows where. Over time, playing becomes easier because of practice. Also, you would have stock combinations in your head which you can use in playing. This is also a sign that you need to ditch the easier puzzles and move on to more challenging kakuro puzzles.

    Las Vegas Golf

    May 31st, 2008

The city of Las Vegas is fast becoming well known, for not only its casinos but also for its golf. Today, there are at least 50 golf courses in and around Las Vegas, though not all of them are operational; some are still under construction. This number is indeed significant, in view of city’s half-million population. This probably has to do with the fact that the tourist traffic in this city has been on the rise.

In the year 2004, around 37 million tourists visited the city and around 22,000 conventions were held there. For a growing number of visitors, golf is an obvious choice; it is a year round sport in Las Vegas. It rains for around six weeks in a year in this city, but even during that time you can play golf. In fact, there is only one week wherein the average person cannot play golf in Las Vegas.

Almost all the major pro tours, such as PGA, LPGA and SPGA, have their annual tournaments here. During the winter one can start playing golf at noon. During the summers–from June to September–one can start playing early in the morning and enjoy some picturesque golf courses designed by some of the most well-known golf course designers in the world.

However, with the growing popularity of this game, the cost of playing it has also gone up. Until a few years ago you could play at some of the old golf courses for around 10 to 12 dollars, with or without a cart. But nowadays there are very few golf courses where this fee is less than a hundred dollars. That has deterred many of the local residents from taking up this game.

Las Vegas Golf provides detailed information on Las Vegas Golf, Las Vegas Golf Courses, Las Vegas Golf Packages, Las Vegas Golf Resorts and more. Las Vegas Golf is affiliated with Best Shows in Las Vegas.

    8 Secrets of a High-Response Order Form

    May 31st, 2008

A good ORDER FORM for a fundraising or a direct sales letter must have the following 8 MINIMUM components:

    1) A set of CHECK BOXES for alternative positive responses, followed by text that SUMMARIZES one more time the BENEFITS (both psychic and material) the donors/customers would be getting.

If you are thinking “but I’ve already detailed all those features and benefits within the body of my fundraising letter (or direct sales copy). Why should I repeat it again?” let me remind you an uncomfortable fact of direct mail business:

Most people will not read your copy beyond the main headline and perhaps the first few lines of the Front Page text.

But they’ll certainly read the Post Script (P.S.) note at the end of the letter.

And then they’ll read the ORDER FORM.

So make sure to use that precious form as yet another last-minute opportunity to “close the sale.”

Here is a BAD example of a check box on an ORDER FORM:

    ” ___ $10″

Here is a GOOD example of a check box:

“___ $10 YES! Caroline, here is my Ten Dollars to help you send 60 more disadvantaged kids this summer to Camp Lake Three Pines, all expenses paid. Please send my FREE Bonus 1 (40 minute DVD of …..) and FREE Bonus 2 (45-page booklet …..) right away to my below address TODAY!”

I guarantee you the second check box will beat the first one each and every time.

    2) Provide as many PAYMENT ALTERNATIVES as possible for your donors. Spell out such options as an easy to read list with CHECK BOXES.

    Here is a suggested list:

    a) Calling a phone number (toll-free, if possible) to provide credit card information.

    b) Mailing the Order Form to an address with credit card information.

    c) Mailing the Order Form to an address with a check or money order.

    d) Faxing the Order Form to a phone number (toll-free, if possible) with credit card information.

    e) Paying through a PayPal account.

    f) Visiting the business office and paying in person.

    g) Visiting a web page and paying online.

All these options should again have a CHECK BOX right before them for the customers to confirm their choice.

    3) If you are selling products, make sure there is a PRODUCT LIST with CHECK BOXES for all the products the customer can order, followed with their prices, and a TOTAL line at the bottom for them to calculate the total cost.

    4) Print as a list with CHECK BOXES all the SHIPPING OPTIONS available (if applicable), together with their respective costs.

    5) Provide AMPLE SPACE on the Order Form for the donors/customers to fill in their Name, Last Name, Street Address, City, State, Zip, Phone Number, Fax Number (optional), e-mail address (optional), Credit Card Information.

    6) Pay special attention to CREDIT CARD INFORMATION block.

Start with a CHECK BOX that reads “Please charge my credit card.”

Follow it with CHECK BOXES for each Credit Card you accept (Visa, MasterCard, AMEX, Discover, Diners, etc.)

Then you should have “Credit Card No.” followed by 16 small squares for the customers to write in their card number.

This should be followed by Expiration Date (enough space for the MONTH and YEAR of expiration).

Optional: you can also ask for the three-digit Control Number that most credit cards have printed in the BACK.

The last entry should be a blank space for that all important SIGNATURE of the customer or donor, authorizing you for the billing.

    7) Print your own Business Name, Address, Phone & Fax Numbers, web site URL, and e-mail address VERY CLEARLY on your Order Form.

    8) If there is a FREE SHIPMENT offer (conditional or unconditional) or any other FREE offer(s) for those donating money or placing an order, make sure it is printed very prominently on the order form. Make that FREE offer jump right out of the form at first look.

If you pay attention to the above 8 points, your Order Form will become a potent tool in increasing your sales and/or donations instead of just another piece of paper heading straight for the thrash bin.

    7 Critical Business Financing Mistakes

    May 30th, 2008

Avoiding the top 7 business financing mistakes is a key component in business survival.

If you start committing these business financing mistakes too often, you will greatly reduce any chance you have for longer term business success.

The key is to understand the causes and significance of each so that you’re in a position to make better decisions.

    >>> Business Financing Mistakes (1) - No Monthly Bookkeeping.

Regardless of the size of your business, inaccurate record keeping creates all sorts of issues relating to cash flow, planning, and business decision making.

While everything has a cost, bookkeeping services are dirt cheap compared to most other costs a business will incur.

And once a bookkeeping process gets established, the cost usually goes down or becomes more cost effective as there is no wasted effort in recording all the business activity.

By itself, this one mistake tends to lead to all the others in one way or another and should be avoided at all costs.

    >>> Business Financing Mistakes (2) - No Projected Cash Flow.

No meaningful bookkeeping creates a lack of knowing where you’ve been. No projected cash flow creates a lack of knowing where you’re going.

Without keeping score, businesses tend to stray further and further away from their targets and wait for a crisis that forces a change in monthly spending habits.

Even if you have a projected cash flow, it needs to be realistic.

A certain level of conservatism needs to be present, or it will become meaningless in very short order.

    >>> Business Financing Mistakes (3) - Inadequate Working Capital

No amount of record keeping will help you if you don’t have enough working capital to properly operate the business.

That’s why its important to accurately create a cash flow forecast before you even start up, acquire, or expand a business.

Too often the working capital component is completely ignored with the primary focus going towards capital asset investments.

When this happens, the cash flow crunch is usually felt quickly as there is insufficient funds to properly manage through the normal sales cycle.

    >>> Business Financing Mistakes (4) - Poor Payment Management.

Unless you have meaningful working capital, forecasting, and bookkeeping in place, you’re likely going to have cash management problems.

The result is the need to stretch out and defer payments that have come due.

This can be the very edge of the slippery slope.

I mean, if you don’t find out what’s causing the cash flow problem in the first place, stretching out payments may only help you dig a deeper hole.

The primary targets are government remittances, trade payables, and credit card payments.

    >>> Business Financing Mistakes (5) - Poor Credit Management

There can be severe credit consequences to deferring payments for both short periods of time and indefinite periods of time.

First, late payments of credit cards are probably the most common ways in which both businesses and individuals destroy their credit.

Second, NSF checks are also recorded through business credit reports and are another form of black mark.

Third, if you put off a payment too long, a creditor could file a judgement against you further damaging your credit.

Fourth, when you apply for future credit, being behind with government payments can result in an automatic turndown by many lenders.

    It gets worse.

Each time you apply for credit, credit inquiries are listed on your credit report.

This can cause two additional problems.

First, multiple inquiries can reduce you overall credit rating or score.

Second, lenders tend to be less willing to grant credit to a business that has a multitude of inquiries on its credit report.

If you do get into situations where you’re short cash for a finite period of time, make sure you proactively discuss the situation with your creditors and negotiate repayment arrangements that you can both live with and that won’t jeopardize your credit.

    >>> Business Financing Mistakes (6) - No Recorded Profitability

For startups, the most important thing you can do from a financing point of view is get profitable as fast as possible.

Most lenders must see at least one year of profitable financial statements before they will consider lending funds based on the strength of the business.

Before short term profitability is demonstrated, business financing is based primary on personal credit and net worth.

For existing businesses, historical results need to show profitability to acquire additional capital.

The measurement of this ability to repay is based on the net income recorded for the business by a third party accredited accountant.

In many cases, businesses work with their accountants to reduce business tax as much as possible but also destroy or restrict their ability to borrow in the process when the business net income is insufficient to service any additional debt.

    >>> Business Financing Mistakes (7) - No Financing Strategy

A proper financing strategy creates 1) the financing required to support the present and future cash flows of the business, 2) the debt repayment schedule that the cash flow can service, and 3) the contingency funding necessary to address unplanned or unique business needs.

This sounds good in principle, but does not tend to be well practiced.

    Why?

Because financing is largely an unplanned and after the fact event.

It seems once everything else is figured out, then a business will try to locate financing.

There are many reasons for this including: entrepreneurs are more marketing oriented, people believe financing is easy to secure when they need it, the short term impact of putting off financial issues are not as immediate as other things, and so on.

Regardless of the reason, the lack of a workable financing strategy is indeed a mistake.

However, a meaningful financing strategy is not likely to exist if one or more of the other 6 mistakes are present.

This reinforces the point that all mistakes listed are intertwined and when more than one is made, the effect of the negative result can become compounded.

An Apple A Day Can Help Kids Make The Grade

    May 30th, 2008

Getting a child to eat healthy food can be a monumental challenge for any parent. However, studies show that all of the haggling, arguing, and hassle is actually worth the effort as a healthy diet leads to enhanced academic performance in school. In fact, malnourished children often struggle in school because they are more likely to miss school, score lower on standardized tests, and repeat grades. Worse, bad eating habits can lead to serious health problems, such as diabetes, that not only affect academic performance but a student’s ability to participate in extracurricular activities.

When you follow the chain of negative events, starting with bad nutrition, it is easy to see how a child’s academic career can suffer. For example, bad nutrition leads to a weakened immune system, which leads to increased doctor visits and missed school days. Missing school makes it harder for students to maintain their grades or keep up with lessons. Even if a student can keep up, bad nutrition can interfere with their ability to accept and digest information. Too much sugar, for instance, can cause attention deficit disorder-like symptoms and chronic headaches, making learning nearly impossible.

These particular nutrition problems usually arise when kids are left in charge of preparing their own breakfast and lunch. If they don’t skip meals all together, they usually are making poor food choices. Out of convenience, kids are drawn to processed foods that are high in sugar, sodium and fat. This brand of malnutrition is particularly insidious because health, growth and cognitive problems may not be noticed until a serious issue has developed.

The simple act of eating breakfast can make a world of difference in warding off many of these health problems. According to the Dairy Council of California, “A nutritious breakfast provides approximately one-fourth of the recommended dietary allowances for key nutrients such as protein, vitamin A, vitamin B6, calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc.” This explains why schools offering breakfast service have seen such major improvements in their students’ overall health, attitude and performance.

However, breakfast is just one of the many ways parents can ensure their kids get a healthy start. Following are some additional suggestions for teaching your children healthy eating habits.

5 Tips to Better Student Nutrition:

    1. Don’t make the mistake of offering a wide variety of packaged snack items; rather offer a few healthy snacks like fresh fruits, trail mix, or cheese.

    2. Make sure the school offers healthy options for lunch and snack; otherwise pack your child’s lunch.

    3. Bring your kids to the grocery store to help choose their favorite foods.

    4. Limit their intake of high-sugar drinks including fruit-flavored drinks such as punch, soda and even 100% fruit juice.

    5. Let your kids help prepare a healthy meal; they’ll have a great time learning to eat nutritiously.

Stretch And Tone Those Muscles: Try Pilates!

    May 29th, 2008

One of the hottest trends in fitness today is Pilates. Pilates is a combination of different body movements that is designed to strengthen, stretch and balance the body.

This body conditioning routine is designed and founded by Joseph H. Pilates. He designed his exercise program by including precision, breathing, concentration, and control.

One of Pilates’ benefits is the improvement of lung capacity because the exercise incorporates deep and heavy breathing. The mind and the muscles are both coordinated in an effective Pilates workout so the strength and flexibility of the abdomen, back, and stabilizer muscles is achieved. Furthermore, the body’s posture, strength and balance are also improved. With these many benefits, overall health and well-being will surely be improved.

Many gyms, spas, and studios who offer Pilates training and equipment have sprouted everywhere. There is no doubt that it already gained a cult following.

The rich and the famous are also drawn to this mind and body exercise. Jamie Lee Curtis, Marissa Tomei, Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts and Rod Stewart are few of the many celebrities who are practicing and reaping the benefits Pilates. So if celebrities are paying big bucks to certified trainers in the country, then this really must be a great exercise.

Yes indeed! It is one great workout. It would not be this popular if it isn’t.

There are two ways on how you can exercise Pilates. One way is to focus on floor exercises. Most people are doing floor exercise because it is less expensive and more convenient. The only equipment you will need is a floor mat and a trainer. If you can’t afford to hire a personal trainer, there are many home videos available in the market that features instructions on how to exercise Pilates. Just make sure that you select videos from reputable instructors. Also be careful when doing the exercises and routines yourself, doing Pilates without a trainer could cause you injury if you don’t perform it cautiously.

The other way to practice Pilates is through the use of equipments that will tone and strengthen the body. Most gyms have these equipments and usually you have to pay a yearly fee to avail the use of their equipments and trainers.

During your workout it would be practical if you wear light and comfortable clothes. Tights and a tank top are a good choice.

Stay focused on the routines and exercises. Your instructor will teach you ways on how to breathe properly and combine it with the body movements. You would not be able to achieve your fitness goals if you do not stay focused and disciplined to practice the right way of making the routines.

Start from the simple routines and work your way up to the more advanced and more rewarding routines. This way your body could adjust slowly and possible injuries will be prevented.

Because Pilates focuses on strength and flexibility and new studies show that two 50-minute Pilates sessions only burn about 250 calories, it would be wise to combine it with other cardiovascular type workouts like running and step aerobics.

Lastly, don’t join the Pilates bandwagon just because you think it is the “in thing” nowadays. Stick with the program, be disciplined and stay focused. Pilates has many benefits and soon enough you’ll notice that your body is improved. It is indeed one great work out, it not only helps in enhancing your daily tasks through flexibility and improved body strength it also make your mind and spirit feel relaxed and rejuvenated.

Building and maintaining an email list

    May 29th, 2008

Every time you send an email or newsletter to your list, one of
    two things happens.

    1. Your email makes a positive impression, and your readers feel
you are worthy of their attention and continued interest. Or,

    2. Your email is disappointing in some way, and your readers
view the next email you send with a little less enthusiasm.

Put another way, every email or newsletter you send will either
build on or diminish the relationship you have with your readers.

My guess is that most retailers and publishers don’t think like
    this.

I have a feeling that most list-owners view their list as an
asset, to do with as they wish. There’s money to be made from
that list, and they’ll do what it takes to maximize revenues.

An email list is a very delicate thing…

It’s not the list that’s delicate, of course. It’s the attention
    and respect of your readers.

You have likely experienced all I’m talking about from the
receiving end. You probably still receive emails and newsletters
from some companies and individuals - but simply don’t open them
any more. One day you’ll get around either to filtering them
into your junk folder or unsubscribing.

Why don’t you read them any more? What went wrong?

At some point you felt it just wasn’t worth it any more.

Maybe the content became repetitive. Maybe the sales pitches
became too relentless. Maybe you had learned all that those
    particular people could teach you.

    >> Pay very close attention to what you send to your readers…

I have seen one huge list become almost totally non-responsive
    within a matter of weeks.

I have seen another list, with millions of subscribers, end up
with an open rate of around 4%.

In both cases this happened because the owners of the lists lost
sight of what a “list” really is.

A list is not a passive asset that can be milked for all it’s
    worth.

A list is a large group of people who signed up because they
trusted you enough to share their email address.

The list is not “yours”. It is theirs…one name at a time.

As a result, you need to think very carefully about what you
send to that list, every single time.

It is understood by your readers that you will sometimes have
something you would like to sell them. It’s OK. But you have to
achieve a balance. You have to give more than you ask for. Your
readers have to feel that they have come out on top in some way.
    Use articles or
tutorials to keep their interest . Over 900 business articles
    are available at http://sss.ad4business.com

    Concluding thoughts…

Before you send each promotional email or newsletter, pause for
a moment. Review the contents and make sure you have the balance
    right.

Make sure there is enough value there.

Make sure the value of what you give outweighs the attention you
    ask for in return.

Pop-up Ads: To Be Or Not To Be?

    May 28th, 2008

Imagine surfing through the Internet, looking for information, or maybe just sauntering along, clicking upon whatever comes your way, not really paying attention to the content, when your eye is caught by a link to a site that claims to have content that really appeals to you at that very moment. You hopefully click upon the link, curious about what awaits you when suddenly you’re hit with one, two, three, four, five pop-up ads and they keep jumping up and hitting you from every corner of the screen. How many times have one of us been attacked by pop-up ads that don’t interest us? How many times have the efforts of the advertisers to sell their products ended up in completely ruining the happy and receptive state of mind the user in a stampede of information, hitting too soon, too suddenly and too forcefully for the user to have any favorable impression of the product.

In fact, in many cases it is observed that the content of the pop-up ads isn’t even the issue at hand. Pop-up ads by their very nature are irritating and annoying to most users of the Internet. People are not happy at being interrupted while they surf or hunt around for information. However, many site owners and web masters feel compelled to include pop-up ads in their advertising mix in order to generate revenue for slow moving sites.

According to a study conducted by the Bunnyfoot University, “The Efficacy of Pop-ups and the Resulting Effect on Brands” Internet users feel harangues and harassed by pop-up ads. The study revealed that pop-up ads precipitated dislike and annoyance with the pop-up ads and for this reason, with the web site and the site owner as well. Most users do not even wait to see the entire ad; they do not even wait till the entire ad is loaded or till the company or brand logo is displayed. More than half the pop-up ads displayed to the sample group were ignored. There were negative comments about the adverts because the users felt that the ads insulted their intelligence by assuming that they could not locate a certain item on their own. Annoyance at the appearance of the adverts also reflected that the users found them to be irrelevant and obstructive to the content of the site. These viewpoints are the opinions of the sample group selected by Bunnyfoot University to conduct their research however, considering the responses garnered from a multitude of Internet users, these opinions are shared by many users of the Internet who want to be able to view content-rich sites without being disturbed by pop-up ads.

The reasons given by the web masters for using pop-up ads is that they are not quite as repulsive and disagreeable to their users as they are portrayed. Another reason many web masters are not willing to dismiss pop-up ads is because they offer the example of Web giants like Yahoo! and Google Inc. who also offer their users pop-up ads. The site owners cite this precedent as justification for using pop-up ads on their sites. Pop-up ads are a good way to earn revenue on sites that offer quality content. The web site owners believe that they are justified in their bid to earn revenue since most of the information featured on the Internet is free for the user, and most users do not want to pay for the information offered by the content-rich sites. The site owners contest that if the users are allowed to view the content on their sites for free, the least they can do is tolerate a couple a pop-up ads that after all, help to pay for the site’ running. Even though most site owners feels justified in displaying pop-up ads on their sites, many other webmasters are resorting to pop-under ads that do not obstruct the user but wait till the user is finished with viewing the information on site. Pop-under ads are not so zealously opposed, they are far more likely to be tolerated and viewed with patience by the user, which is why increasingly more and more web masters are opting for pop-under ads to fund their sites.

    May 28th, 2008

Hampton Court Palace can be found to the south west of London, on the edge of the River Thames, enclosed by land and to die for grounds. Hampton Court Palace, Henry 8s spectacular river shore apartment is located in more than six hundred acres of plants and gardens.
